Following the recent announcement of a Duke Nukem movie, speculation began about who would play the titular character. Well, it seems WWE Icon, John Cena will be the man to shoulder that burden.

Duke Nukem was once a wildly popular action game -more so a satire of cheesy 80s action movies with bulging pecks, huge explosions, and more. After close to 20 years of development hell, a sequel was eventually released but lacked much of the heart and self-awareness fans had come to love. What’s more, time had simply passed the character by. Rather than being edgy, Nukem was now a trove of cringeworthy one-liners and tired antics. Needless to say, Duke Nukem Forever was essentially a disaster with regard to its reception,

Even still, given Cena’s charisma and the potential to right some of the wrongs of DNF, this project could work. Maybe cut back on some of the horribly-aged one-liners and be self aware of the fact that you are, in fact, a parody or satire. With such treatment,  the film might have a chance. Still, until Paramount signs a writer and director, we won’t know with any certainty whether John Cena advance beyond his current “talks.” Regardless, one thing is certain: the sexist overtones seen throughout the source material will most likely have to be heavily toned down or eliminated altogether.

Still, given Cena’s recent transition from a full-time performer and his testing the Hollywood waters with several roles the past couple of years, it would make sense for him to first embrace the action hero role, much like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson before him.

What do you think? Is John Cena capable of reprising the role of a crass action hero dishing out overblown violence? Let us know in the comments.
