Troy Aikman understands what Jerry Jones was saying.
His roster, the Cowboys owner and general manager has repeatedly said, was talented enough to contend in 2019.
Then Dallas fell to 8-8, losing four of its final seven games, and missed the playoffs. Head coach Jason Garrett’s contract with his longtime team was not extended. The Cowboys hired Mike McCarthy to coach what they believe is a group capable of winning now.
Aikman agrees with the premise: This Cowboys roster had more than the requisite talent.
“Yeah. Yes. Without a doubt,” the Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboys quarterback said Tuesday from a Fox Sports Super Bowl week availability. “I thought, looking at them, that they were really talented. I would talk to coaches around the league and to a man—there’s not many coaches that wouldn’t have traded their roster with the Cowboys.”
